Overview
The Operations Manager role will manage overall business and plant operations and is responsible for the effective and successful resource planning and staff management, productivity, quality control, and safety measures including serving as the company representative on regulatory issues. This role will be expected to enhance and optimize operational procedures, systems, and principles in the areas of information flow, leadership, business processes and organizational structure. The Operations Manager will have proven experience demonstrating and reinforcing effective mentorship and coaching techniques across all levels. The Operations Manager will be focused on finding ways to increase and sustain the quality of customer service, and implementing operational best practices while achieving desired compliance standards, efficiency targets, and profitability.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with General Manager and management team to set and/or implement policies, procedures, and systems and to follow through with implementation
- Provide effective leadership and strategic direction to the manufacturing and operations team
- Timely and effective engagement, interaction and direction to Plant Manager, Area Supervisors, Team Lead hands, Engineering, Maintenance, Quality Assurance & Control, and Project Coordinators to meet productions goals and demands
- Work with customers, functional leaders, and internal staff to meet organizational requirements
- Analyze production labour requirements and implement timely and strategic capacity decisions
- Communicate customer issues with operations team and devise ways of improving the customer experience, including resolving problems and complaints
- Set and monitor department and production objectives
- Carry out quarterly and annual performance reviews for direct reports
- Identify and drive the necessary operating rhythm, communication, and recognition at all levels in the plant to be consistent with the business strategy and company culture
- Champion and support development of team-oriented approaches to problem solving
- Actively drive and participate in budgeting and forecasting for production planning
- Key player in the implementation of 5S, lean manufacturing efforts within the plant to maximize employee contribution, productivity and drive improvements in product quality, and process efficiency with continuous yield improvements
- Assist development and review of custom pricing for specialty products
- Prepare the manufacturing team to execute strategic company objectives
- Promote safety and ensure teams compliance with all safety and environmental rules, policies, and procedures
- Define and communicate job expectations; planning, monitoring, appraising, and reviewing job contributions
- Analyze, implement, and improve organizational process and workflow, employee and space requirements, and equipment layout
- Manage risks to avoid delays or reputational damage
- Devise cost-effective plans to enable effective project completion
- Meeting with clients, stakeholders, and project coordinators to report on project progress, delays, and project risks and contribute to contingency plans as required
- Monitor industry trends, technological advancements, and regulatory changes to proactively implement appropriate changes to maintain industry competitiveness and leadership
Qualifications
Education Required
- Post-Secondary Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field
Years of experience
- Minimum 7-10 years' experience in an Operations Manager position or equivalent role
Specific Experience
- Exceptional leadership abilities with a record of accomplishment of successfully managing and motivating teams
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the proven ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams
- Proven knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement practices is desirable
- Proficiency in using manufacturing software for production planning and inventory management
- Proven experience and success in a manufacturing environment
- Demonstrated management experience in a unionized environment is considered an asset
- High level of knowledge and experience with WSIB and Health and Safety policies and practices
- Strong understanding of manufacturing operations, ideally within in a precast concrete or similar manufacturing environment
- Knowledge of drainage and irrigation systems, pipelines, roadways, and highways, sewers, and sewage treatment facilities
