About the Water Quality and Exposure Team
The Water Quality and Exposure team is responsible for performing a variety of testing activities to support the certification of potable water plumbing products using documented operating procedures. Product safety testing follows established procedures and requires the operation, maintenance of Laboratory and Test Measurement Equipment and using established Quality Assurance procedures. Activities involve review and understanding of various products submitted for evaluation and the application of the relevant product safety standards, testing of those products and the compiling of data and summarizing of test results into test reports in the most efficient and effective manner possible. Provides ongoing written and oral status reports to the immediate Manager and, when required, to Certifiers and Senior Laboratory Technicians. Performs specialized duties as assigned and as required.
Job Summary:
CSA Group has an immediate opportunity for Laboratory Technician in the Water Quality Group in Toronto, Ontario. Work alongside and learn from the Water Quality laboratory technicians and build core project management and technical skills needed for future success by assuming a hands-on role supporting internal project delivery.
Under guidance, direction and general supervision, set-up, operate test equipment and conduct specific and routine tests. Disassemble and assemble test samples. Record technical data, draft reports, write product descriptions. Note and record substandard features of products. Act as an assistant in complex or unusual tests, under guidance from senior staff.
Responsibilities:
Gain knowledge and familiarity with laboratory Test Measurement Equipment and standards. i.e., CSA and US and International standards, understanding testing procedures, titration, use of balances and pipettes, etc.
Set up and operate all test equipment and perform all tests within a certain product area, adhering to safety protocols and using PPE at all times.
Perform tests in accordance with Laboratory Work Orders issued by job holders and conduct routine tests independently.
Act as an assistant in complex/unusual test setups under guidance from senior staff or job holders when performing one or more phases of the test work (i.e., re-examination, audits, investigations, conformity, etc.)
Record and compile technical data, perform calculations, and summarize test results to prepare technical documents
Assemble and disassemble test samples, install test equipment in preparation for testing, and prepare necessary reagents for testing as per applicable standards
Note and record discrepancies of products that may appear before or during tests and share them with appropriate personnel for resolution
Coordinate sample analysis with outside contract labs that involve developing purchase requisitions, acquiring quotes, issuing PO’s, maintaining chain of custody records, reviewing invoices, and confirming sampling reports
Monitor and maintain lab supplies/consumables/chemicals inventory and restock as necessary
Maintain good housekeeping of tools, equipment, and work area following tests and carry out necessary laboratory clean-up duties
Learn and participate in a robust ISO 17025 Quality Assurance program
Perform other duties as assigned or as required by Management and willingness to occasionally work overtime on weekends/Statutory holidays
Education & Experience:
University Degree in Physical Sciences Program (Chemistry, Biology, Chemical, Toxicology, etc.) or 3-year Engineering Technician (OACETT) with knowledge in Chemistry
At least 1 year experience in an environmental testing laboratory
Knowledge of plumbing and drinking water products industry knowledge would be an asset
Technical Skills:
Knowledge of Water Quality products’ test set-up and analysis in the exposure lab would be an asset.
Knowledge of Water Quality and DWTU standards and testing procedures would be an asset.
Knowledge of Analytical Chemistry (wet chemistry methods and instrumental methods)
Knowledge in monitoring drinking water parameters through wet chemistry analysis (pH, alkalinity, hardness, chlorine, turbidity, TDS, conductivity)
Knowledge of Spectroscopic Techniques; Uv-Vis, X-ray Fluorescence, OES, ICP-MS
Other Skills:
Mechanical aptitude and ability to operate simple hand tools
Ability to lift up to 50lbs, stand for long periods of time, and perform repetitive tasks
Organization and ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative, and team-based environment.
Self-motivated and ability to work with moderate to minimal supervision
Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills to interact effectively
Demonstrated abilities to plan, organize, prioritize, follow through and evaluate assigned functions and duties to handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet required delivery dates
Knowledge in OHS&E procedures and guidelines
